Gastric band surgery (Lap band, Adjustable gastric banding)
Overview
The surgery reduces the room of the stomach by placing a band around the upper
part of stomach. The size of band can be adjusted by controlling the pressure inside
through a port located in the skin of abdomen. Lap band helps patients feel full quickly
and reduces food intake. It is a relatively simple procedure which does not remove
stomach tissue. Once patient achieves the aimed weight loss, the band could be
removed after consulting with doctor.

Ideal candidates for Lab band are
- Having heart problems, sleeping apnea and type 2 diabetes due to obesity
- Between 30 and 40 of body mass index (BMI)
- Ready to commit to healthy lifestyle and make regular visit for follow-up
- The first time receiving stomach surgery
Process of procedure
Begin the procedure with sedation
Insert the band and place it round the stomach via laparoscopic surgery
Place a port controlling pressure under the skin of abdomen
Apply pressure in the band
Expected duration of hospital stay
- Generally the procedure takes about 1~2 hours.
- A week of hospitalization is expected when there is no significant complication.

Post-operative care
- Bed rest with legs elevated
- Medical team will closely monitor patient to detect any signs of complication
