Jaw Surgery (Double Jaw / Orthognathic Surgery)
Overview
Jaw surgery, also called as Double jaw surgery is performed when orthodontic treatment alone cannot solve problems with malocclusions such as protruded jaw, over bite, open bite, etc. In addition, by correcting the facial alignment, the function of jaw and biting as well as esthetic side are improved. Patients usually get braces on their
teeth prior to the surgery to assist in facial realignment.

Process of procedure
- Put braces on patient's teeth (6 months prior to the surgery)
- Design the facial shape with doctor
- Proceed general anesthesia
- Incise inside the mouth
- Cut jaw bones and reposition them to adjust alignment
- Crews, wires, bone plates will be used to fix the corrected position
Expected duration of hospital stay
- Generally the procedure takes about 2~3 hours.
- 2~3 days of hospitalization
Post-operative care
- Need substantial rest
- Take prescribed medication for pain control
- Avoid active movement
- Avoid situation that can cause pressure on the area (constipation, sneezing, brushing teeth)
- Take liquid food and then move on to soften food as doctor's order
- Stitches to be removed in two weeks of surgery
